When I first heard about Outpost X, a sci-fi glamping resort in the Utah desert, I knew it was something special. As an adventure filmmaker with a love for unique places, I was eager to explore this off-grid retreat with my world-famous adventure cat, Simon. Trading the familiar peaks of Colorado for a dry lakebed 50 miles west of Cedar City, we found a place that felt like stepping into another world. Simon absolutely loved it, and honestly, I did too.

What Makes Outpost X So Unique

Outpost X is not your typical desert getaway. Spanning 100 acres, this off-grid resort blends sci-fi aesthetics with the raw beauty of the Utah desert. Imagine a mashup of Tatooine from Star Wars and the creative spirit of Burning Man. The resort was created by Travis Chambers, a former 20th Century Fox strategist, who raised over $900,000 through crowdfunding to build what he calls a "film set you can sleep in." Since opening in 2023, Outpost X has maintained about 90% occupancy, proving its appeal to travelers seeking something different.

One of the coolest features is the four-part podcast that plays during your drive in, setting the mood with a fictional backstory that makes the experience feel like stepping into a story.

Our Stay in the Cave Villas

We stayed in one of the brand-new Cave Villas, which start at around $340 per night. These earthen dwellings are inspired by Luke Skywalker's home, built into the desert floor with thick walls that keep the temperature comfortable. Inside, the villa includes a queen bed, a kitchenette, air conditioning and heating, Starlink internet, and a TV. It’s a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern convenience.

For those who want a view, the Glass Cave Villas start at about $298 per night and replace one wall with large glass panels facing the open playa. Waking up to the vast desert landscape framed by glass is an unforgettable experience.

What You Can Do On-Site

Outpost X offers more than just unique accommodations. Here are some highlights from our stay:

  • X-Spa: This spa experience includes a mud bath, cold plunge, sauna, and a waterfall hot tub under the stars. It’s a perfect way to relax after exploring the desert.

  • Ka’an Lounge: A communal space with drums, guitars, and singing bowls where guests can gather for music and mocktails.

  • Sand Cruisers: Electric speeders that look like they belong in the Star Wars universe, perfect for zipping around the playa.

  • The Bed on the Playa: A queen bed set alone in the desert, kept because guests love the surreal feeling of sleeping under the open sky.

  • Stairway to Heaven Sculpture: A striking art installation ideal for drone shots or quiet meditation.

Who Should Visit Outpost X

If you love Star Wars, Burning Man, desert landscapes, or just want to stay somewhere wildly unique, Outpost X is for you. It’s also a great base for exploring nearby national parks, with Zion National Park just about 90 minutes away.

Getting There and Booking Tips

The closest airport is Cedar City (CDC), about 95 minutes from Outpost X. Las Vegas is another option, roughly 2.5 hours away. A useful tip: when driving from Cedar City, take Highway 56 through Newcastle instead of the GPS shortcut for a smoother ride.

Both Cave Villas and Glass Cave Villas are open now. You can book your stay by visiting the link in @outpost.x’s Instagram bio. Check out my instagram video on my Instagram
